Camp Cooper
& The Cooper Center
for Environmental Learning

More Than 5,000 Student Interactions This Year
A Record-Breaking Year, Thanks To A Temporary Pivot Online

To keep staff and students safe during the pandemic, we switched to conducting our live sessions over Zoom. While in-person programs will always be our preference, by virtualizing our work we were able to reach more than 4,000 students through live online sessions.

Our self-led environmental education series, Camp Cooper Online, served an additional 1,000 students in the last year.

Camp Cooper Online is our free, online portal to environmental learning, made fun and new by our amazing team of educators. Activities have been tailored to being done at home with original videos, downloadable worksheets for older kids to complete independently or for younger kids to complete with parents.

Camp Cooper Wildlife Camera
Capturing The Hidden Desert

Over the last year, we have used wildlife cameras to observe wildlife accessing a watering hole - bringing the magic of Sonoran desert wildlife to students and classrooms in Tucson and around the world.

Visit our new wildlife camera page to see your favorite Sonoran stars on the Camp Cooper "stage," including javelina, bobcat, mule deer, owls, packrats, bunnies, and more!

Last month, a predator-prey scenario played out in the desert around Camp Cooper, and we've got the footage to prove it! With camp so quiet this year, we're seeing some animals that would not otherwise be around.

Solve the mystery
Warning - this video contains deer carcass footage.

This video reigns as our most popular Facebook post ever, with over 62,000 views. It's worth a watch, and makes us even more excited about the summer rains ahead.

Mourning Ann-Eve Pedersen
Camp Alum & Major Supporter
An incredible supporter of Camp Cooper and the Cooper Center, Ann-Eve Pedersen attended Camp Cooper as a child, again later with her own children, and then supported Camp Cooper financially in her capacity as Executive Director of the Southwestern Foundation for Education and Historical Preservation. Pedersen passed away unexpectedly at the age of 55.

"Ann-Eve came to help Camp Cooper at our most desperate hour, during the time when we had to transition to receiving the bulk of our funding for programs and staff from the community. More than that, she helped me to make key connections with others who support us and provided valuable advice that has helped me grow as a fundraiser on behalf of Camp Cooper. We are heartbroken by her loss."

- Colin Waite, director of The Cooper Center

Progress On Demonstration Garden & Nature Play Space

We are seeing some great progress on the UArizona Compost Cats demonstration garden and our Nature Play Space. Both spaces will make use of sustainable, live ocotillo fencing to create play boundaries for little ones, or to guard against deer feasting on our demonstration garden. Fencing by Sonoran Ocotillo.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Cooper Center for Environmental Learning, an outreach program of the University of Arizona College of Education, sits on the traditional homelands of the Tohono O’odham and Pascua Yaqui, who have stewarded this land from time immemorial. Aligning with Cooper Center’s and the University’s core value of a diverse and inclusive community, it is an institutional responsibility for us to recognize, represent, and acknowledge the ancestors, people, culture, and history our community resides on.
